SPACE RACE
They’ve been going hopping mad at NOCN - but all in a good cause. Staff spent half an hour racing Space Hoppers along The Street at the Quadrant last Friday morning (January 29) to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. The knockout competition was just the latest in a string of fundraising events which the staff team organise throughout the year. They choose a different charity every four months and they’ve already donates money to Macmillan Cancer Support and St Lukes and next in line is Sheffield Children’s Hospital. If you enjoyed the spectacle, why not drop a small donation in to Mandy at NOCN, Suites 25/26.

EXCELLENCE IN A CUP
Neal at Rialto Coffee Company is a man with a mission – to make you the perfect cup of speciality coffee. One of the Quadrant’s virtual tenants, Neal’s company hand-roasts and blends its own coffee beans to supply cafes, bars and restaurants with a fresh, espresso-based, high quality blend, but that alone is not enough he says. He’s also dedicated to training café staff far and wide in the arts of the barista – the expert Italian bartenders. Lesley and her staff at Magellan’s have already signed up to learn the secrets of serving coffee at its best and here’s a hint for all coffee drinkers – don’t let the air get at your freshly ground coffee – seal it up tight and keep it in the fridge or freezer, just bringing it out to fill the coffee maker.

SARAH'S ON THE UP!
We love success stories and our teenage receptionist Sarah Shaw is the latest. Eighteen year old Sarah joined us just over a year ago. She’d been without a job and had no training, so The Quadrant took her on in a junior role and she’s proved to be a quick learner as well as a friendly face on reception. Now she’s moving on, having successfully applied for a more senior post running the reception at Zest, a community organisation in North Sheffield. “We’ll be sorry to see her go, but glad she’s taking the next step up the career ladder,” says Quadrant manager Jim Coleman. “Now we’ll be advertising for an 18-24 year old under the Government’s new Future Jobs scheme and hopefully bringing on another young person.”

WATCH OUT GORDON...
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey could have competition in the future - Jim Coleman is taking up cooking! Jim, Lesley Olive cafe manager and Tracey Maurice one of the cafe assistants, together with Jim’s 85 year old mother Nance, have signed up for a six week cookery course run by chef Michael Price at Danum School, Doncaster. Michael, whose company The Gourmet Kitchen specialises in catering at the top end of the market, is also using his expertise to help Magellan’s improve its food and service. And how did Jim’s mum get in on the act? “Well, she just loves cooking and loves socialising, so it’s right up her street,” says Jim. “And nobody will dare use the F word when she’s around!”

IT'S ALL IN THE WRIST
Take flour, eggs, milk and a lot of flippin’ good sports and you have the basics for that traditional Shrove Tuesday event – a pancake race. Quadrant tenants – and visitors – are urged not to miss out on what promises to be a good laugh. The race will be held on Tuesday February 16 at 1pm in the indoor Street. There will be a women’s race, a men’s race and, for those who support equality in all things, a race for men and women to battle it out. It will be £1 to enter and the winner of each race will receive a £5 voucher to spend in the quadrants own cafe Magellan’s. The money raised will go to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Entry fees and donations can be made to reception.
