Stress management specialist Karen Wilson, who set up Relaxing Alternatives eight years ago, knows that it’s a lifestyle approach, not crash diets that keep us fit and healthy. She runs workshops for companies in and around Yorkshire to share the secrets of good, healthy living with workforces.
She and her colleagues go out to workplaces - taking their massage chair - and she reduced the stress levels of around a score of Quadrant folk with her skilful head, neck and back massage. She and her colleagues use a range of alternative therapies including reflexology and accupressure as well as monitoring blood pressure and chloresterol and giving advice on stress management, nutrition and exercise.
“In the current economic climate the task is to make companies realise that they still need to look after the health of their employees. In fact, it’s probably more important at times like these, but it is harder for small to medium sized companies,” says Karen.
However help is at hand in the form of a Government initiative – the Wellbeing Challenge Fund – which is providing £4 million over two years to support smaller businesses who want to run health and relaxation sessions for staff. The first year’s money has been snapped up but applications for the 2011 round of funding will start later this year on www.workingforhealth.gov.uk/Initiatives/ChallengeFund/ Karen is happy to help companies put together a bid and can be contacted on Karen@relaxing-alternatives.co.uk or 07870 179 881.
Meanwhile, she’ll be keeping in touch with the Quadrant and giving us a health tip every month for inclusion on our monthly email newsletter.
