Quadrant folk trial pioneering cycling scheme

The Quadrant workers are the first recruits for the £250,000 scheme which is being funded by Sheffield City Council, the Government’s Cycle Levy Fund and Get Cycling. It aims to encourage 800 commuters to bike to work over the next two years.

The new recruits, who were signed up at a roadshow at the Quadrant on March 25, will be loaned bikes for the first three weeks and will have an opportunity to buy the bikes at a discounted price.

“We were lucky to have a sunny day and there was a constant stream of people in and out of the roadshow which created a great atmosphere,” said Louise Gold from Get Cycling.

“Lots of people enjoyed trying out the bikes and we signed up about 20 people, so recruitment is still open. Quadrant employees now need to go to www.bikeboost.org/sheffield to register with the scheme.”

Quadrant manager Jim Coleman, is one of those who has agreed to give up driving in favour of cycling to work at least half the time, said: “Given that the Quadrant was designed to be a ‘green’ building, it seems appropriate that we should be helping to spearhead environmental initiatives such as getting more people to cycle to work and we’re always keen to be first in line to try out new ideas.”

The handover of bikes to people working at the Quadrant will be on April 15 and 16. The next Bikeboost roadshow will take place at the NHS Primary Care Trust HQ in Darnall in April.
