Peaks of fitness

Sallie Chapman from the Open College Network will be joining three friends on July 3 to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk .  They will set off at 6am to climb the three highest peaks in Yorkshire, totalling 2153 metres or 7424 feet - that’s 3000 feet higher than Ben Nevis.

The walk covers 26 miles and takes 10 and 12 hours to complete. “It’s no easy task,” says Sallie in what must be the understatement of the year. She’s hoping to raise £500 for Marie Curie, the charity which supports people with terminal cancer. Donations can be made on http://original.justgiving.com/salliechapman1 or email Sallie on sallie.chapman@nocn.org.uk

UK Online’s Kevin Maye, on the other hand, has just raised £165 for the children’s cancer charity PACT by completing his first triathlon - swimming 500m, cycling 14km, then running 7km in Tadcaster.

Not bad for someone who didn’t exercise much until last year. “I started running with the office running club but hadn’t ridden a bike for ten years” says Kevin. He’s already signed up for his next triathlon in the Dearne Valley next month and this time it’s the full Olympic distance - swimming one and a half kilometres, cycling 40km and running 10km.

So he’s keeping up the training with his colleagues: “But now they’re complaining I run a bit too fast,” he says. Late sponsors can support Kevin on www.justgiving.com/Kevin-Maye
